Matouš Hejl

Tvorba Matouše Hejla (*1989) zní v koncertních a chrámových, ale také v pro hudbu netypických prostorech; objevuje se rovněž v divadle, filmu a zvukových instalacích. Vedle skladatelské činnosti je Hejl aktivní jako klavírista a varhaník. V roce 2025 měly premiéru jeho Nešpory na Svatováclavský chorál pro sedm zpěváků, ansámbl a varhany. V roce 2023 připravil hudebně-divadelní oratorium Josef pro zpěváka, herce, klavír, kontrabas a bicí a ve stejném roce byla na festivalu Pražské jaro uvedena jeho ansámblová skladba Kývání v provedení souboru Klangforum Wien. V roce 2022 vytvořil s divadelním spolkem JEDL inscenaci Opera Ibsen, adaptaci Ibsenových Přízraků, která získala ocenění divadelní kritiky v kategorii hudba roku. V roce 2018 se stal finalistou skladatelské soutěže České filharmonie, která premiérovala jeho orchestrální skladbu Crossings. Hudba k filmům Ztraceni v Mnichově (2015) a Staříci (2019) vynesla Matouši Hejlovi nominaci na Českého lva za nejlepší hudbu. V letech 2019 a 2020 uvedl Orchestr Berg jeho imerzivní skladbu Prolínám, stmívám. Skladba Kaleidoscope (2017), kterou premiéroval tentýž soubor, získala ocenění Trochu nižší C4. V současnosti působí jako pedagog na New York University Prague.

The work of Matouš Hejl (*1989) is heard in concert halls and churches as well as in spaces not traditionally associated with music; it also appears in theatre, film, and sound installations. Alongside composition, Hejl is active as a pianist and organist. In 2025, his Vespers on the Saint Wenceslas Chorale for seven singers, ensemble, and organ received its premiere. In 2023, he prepared the music-theatre oratorio Josef for singer, actor, piano, double bass, and percussion, and in the same year his ensemble piece Kývání was performed by Klangforum Wien at the Prague Spring Festival. In 2022, together with a theatre company JEDL, he prepared Opera Ibsen, an adaptation of Ibsen’s Ghosts, which was recognised by the theatre critics as the best music of the year. In 2018, he became a finalist in the composition contest of the Czech Philharmonic, which premiered his piece Crossings. Music for films Lost in Munich (2015) and Old-Timers (2019) earned Matouš Hejl nominations for the Czech Lion Award for best music. In 2019 and 2020, the Berg Orchestra performed his immersive composition Prolínám, stmívám. His piece Kaleidoscope (2017), premiered by the same ensemble, was awarded the Trochu nižší C4 price for contemporary music. Hejl currently teaches at New York University Prague.
